Water Irrigation Network to Save Chaqala

On August 24, 2023, with the aid of Assyrian Aid Society of Canada (AAS-CA), the Assyrian Aid Society of Iraq (AAS-I) implemented a project to extend a new drip network to the Assyrian village of Chaqala to restore the village’s lands that were damaged from a fire.

On August 10, 2023, 4,500 trees were lost due to a suspicious fire set by unknown individuals, resulting in damage worth $1.5 million. The remaining agriculture in Chaqala now require extensive restoration in order to recover from the damage caused by the fire. This includes 3000 apple trees, 1000 grape trees, 300 almond trees, 100 fig trees, and more than 100 olive trees, in addition to the burning of the drip irrigation network, which was extended by AAS-I in 2016 after another fire occurred by an unknown perpetrator.

AAS-I, with the aid of AAS-CA, were able to respond to the urgent request of the farmers to restore these lands and maintain the few trees that were not destroyed by the fire.
